εὔφημος

Etym. φήμη

I. "uttering sounds of good omen", or "abstaining from inauspicious words", i. e. "religiously silent", opp. to δύσφημος, Aesch., etc.; εὐφήμου στόμα φροντίδος ἱέντες uttering words of "religious" thought, i. e. keeping a holy silence, Soph.; so, ὑπ᾽ εὐφήμου βοῆς, i. e. in silence, id=Soph.; εὔφημα φώνει, like εὐφήμει, id=Soph.

II. in positive sense, "auspicious", Aesch., Eur., etc.:—so adv. -μως, "with or in words of good omen", Hhymn., Aesch.
