I. "a bridle, bit", Il.; χαλινὸν ἐμβαλεῖν γνάθοις Eur.:—of the horse, χαλινὸν οὐκ ἐπίσταται φέρειν Aesch.; χ. δέχεσθαι Xen.; χ. ἐνδακεῖν "to champ" the bit, Plat.:—of the rider, τὸν χ. διδόναι "to give" a horse "the rein", Xen.; ὀπίσω σπᾶν Plat.
