Etym. χαλκός

I. "of copper or bronze, brasen", Lat. aeneus, aheneus, Hom., etc.; χ. Ζεύς "a bronze" statue of Zeus, Hdt.; ἡ χαλκῆ Ἀθηνᾶ Dem.; χάλκεον ἱστάναι τινά (v. ἵστημι A. III).

b. χ. ἀγών a contest "for a shield of brass", Pind.

2. metaph. "brasen", i. e. stout, strong, χάλκεον ἦτορ, a heart "of brass", Il.; ὂψ χ. id=Il.; χ. ὕπνος, i. e. the sleep of death, Virg. "ferreus somnus", id=Il.
